Week 2 Readings
Vaughn article: J. Vaughn describes the attributes and problems with running a technologically advanced online library. He starts by explaining the wealth of resources and how they affirm the University of Las Vegas' "commitment to technical collaboration", as well as how it helps them to reach their goal of being a premier research facility. What most impressed me was how their systems evolve to meet users' needs or expectations. One example of this is to start new systems, not just add to previously-established ones. Another aspect of it that struck me is that the human element  was still there, both in the need for space management for the staff and the community members who come in to use the library alongside the students.

GCFLearnFree.org: What I learned from these Tutorials:
                                 1. A server can look like a regular desktop computer.
                                 2. Game consoles are computers.
                                 3. Linus is an open-source Operating System.
                                 4. There are cloud apps and there are desktop apps. Desktop apps need to
be installed onto the computer. Cloud apps don't.
                                 5. The Cloud is all  that is stored and accessible on the internet.
I liked the interactive features of the tutorials: the videos and click-link information. It was a fun and low-stress way to learn. There are other aspects about the computer that I learned for the first time today, but  I don't want to embarass myself!

Guidelines for Digitization, Chapters 1 and 2: I started by reading the introduction, where I was amused by the terminology used to discern between paper that is digitized and material that is already digital but is to be preserved. The process of digitizing the paper was called "creating digital surrogates" and the further storage of digitized material called "born digital material". I enjoyed the use of language there. Very creative!
There were some different reasons given for digitization, that I had not considered before. One was that it gives the institution more financial opportunities to have the digital resources. Another was the chances to collaborate and communicate with other institutions that digital materials provide. It makes sense!
